Sister Carmella Luke, O.S.B.

How long have you been involved in vocation ministry?

I've been vocation director for about four years here at Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, South Dakota. I'm also a Member Area Coordinator for the Upper Midwest, along with Brother Larry Schatz, F.S.C.

Are you part of a vocation team?

I am the only person whose ministry is vocation work, but I have a committee of sisters who support me and help plan and carry out projects with me.

What idea(s) have you used lately that you have been excited about?

One event that we gear up for in the late summer is our annual "S'mores with the Sisters." We invite over students and staff from our sponsored university to share in a picnic supper with the sisters.  We cap off the evening with a prayer together and yummy s'mores. This is a great way to build relationships with both students and staff at Mount Marty University.

Has being a member of NRVC been helpful to you?

Being a member of NRVC has been very helpful in my ministry.  The Orientation Program, as well as other workshops, helped me learn the crucial pieces of vocation work.  I have also appreciated the connection to other people working in this field. Many of them have shared what has worked for them, and it's been nice to meet new people. The staff at NRVC is wonderful, and there are so many helpful resources that they provide.

What is an insight about this ministry that has been valuable for you?

Vocation ministry has many facets.  It is not just about discerning with young women a possible call to religious life, but it includes planting the seeds of all vocations in the hearts of youth and young adults.

What do you find rewarding  in vocation work?

I find the opportunity to help young people know God more closely very rewarding.  As they come to know themselves better, they also come to a deeper relationship with God.

Would you like to share a "fun fact" about yourself?

In my monastery I'm know as the "Chicken Whisperer" because of my love for chickens. When we get chicks in the spring I usually give them each a name, and I love to give them treats.
