Sister Xiomara Méndez Hernández, O.P. is an Adrian Dominican Sister and a hospital chaplain at Loyola University Health System in Chicago, with a special focus on cancer patients. Mr. Hosffman Ospino, Ph.D. is an associate professor of theology and religious education at Boston College, where he is also the director of Graduate Programs in Hispanic Ministry. He has written extensively—including for HORIZON—on Hispanic ministry, Catholic education, evangelization, and catechesis. Ospino is currently conducting a national study on Latino vocations. He will present on "Called to Accompanying God’s People in a Time of Paradigm Changes."
Sister Mary Pellegrino, C.S.J. is a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden, Pennsylvania. She has served nearly 10 years as her community's congregational moderator and was the 2016 president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. She will speak on "Living No Longer for Ourselves: Communion as Vocation."
Cardinal Joseph William Tobin, C.Ss.R. leads the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. Within his Redemptorist community, he has served in multiple leadership roles, including superior general. In addition he served for two years as secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Currently he chairs the USCCB Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations. A speaker at NRVC's 2012 convocation, he will preside at the opening Mass of our 2018 convocation.

Short videos featuring people from the above groups will be released on social media during the week, including one with NRVC's executive director, Sister Sharon Dillon, S.S.J.-T.O.S.F. Be sure catch the videos on NRVC's Facebook and Twitter pages (@NatRelVocConf).

The NRVC Board is seeking nominations of people to serve on the board, as well as nominations of those who have made outstanding contributions to vocation ministry.
Nomination forms (for oneself or another) are due May 15 and should be accompanied by a letter of approval from the nominee's superior. The board will hold interviews and make selections by June 13. The term of service begins in the fall of 2018 and lasts three years, with an option to renew once.
Nominations are welcome for the Mustard Seed Award, which recognizes individuals or groups that have initiated a small, local vocations effort that has taken root and expanded. These nominees need not be vocation ministers or members of NRVC.
Nominations are also welcome for the NRVC Recognition Award. This award honors members of NRVC (for at least three years) who have made an outstanding contribution to vocation ministry.
The latest studies of U.S. religious institutes show that the number of people entering them rose slightly to 524 (from 502 last year) and the number of people making final vows, 208, dipped by eight over last year. Overall, both figures are among the highest since 2011. In addition, entrants are spread out among 182 communities, defying the myth that only a handful of orders is attracting new members.
The latest data comes from two studies released in February by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at the request of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops. They are: New Sisters and Brothers Professing Perpetual Vows in Religious Life: The Profession Class of 2017 and Women and Men Entering Religious Life: The Entrance Class of 2017
The number of final professions has waxed and waned since CARA began the "Profession Class" reports in 2011, but the last two years have shown the largest numbers to date, with 216 people making final vows in 2016 and 208 in 2017.
Other trends in age, ethnicity, qualities that attract people, etc. have held fairly steady with only slight changes from year to year.
Are you prepared to screen and assess candidates whose culture or ethnicity is different from yours? If you can use help, consider taking our July 20-21 workshop "Developing Intercultural Competencies in Screening and Assessment," to take place in Chicago.
Father Gerard McGlone, S.J., Ph.D. will be the presenter. This practical workshop will cover how best to understand and welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds. The "normal" protocols of vocation personnel and psychologists may not be appropriate for these candidates. This workshop will explore what techniques and tools might be better and, more important, how to become more interculturally competent vocation personnel and communities.
Details and registration are here.
