The NRVC is searching for a dynamic, highly motivated, tech-savvy ministry leader to join our team as our Director of Communications. General Summary

In order to serve our members and fulfill the mission of the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), this full-time position implements and directs effective external and internal communications for the organization. With deep understanding of Catholic religious life and vocation ministry, this position is responsible for ensuring the quality, accuracy, and consistency of the NRVC’s communications. Our quarterly HORIZON journal is a key member benefit and a standard in the field of vocation ministry. Planning and producing HORIZON is paramount in this position and requires researching and fostering relationships with reliable professionals. This position is part of a leadership team that operates together to fulfill the role of executive director of the NRVC.

Principal duties and responsibilities

PLANNING & STRATEGIES

  • Develop a Communications Plan for the organization to help advance its mission and improve efficiency and engagement
  • Review key external communications to ensure integrity, accuracy, and brand consistency, including renewals, appeals, website, and social media posts
  • Develop and maintain media contacts and relationships with communication directors in the field to advance the NRVC’s message and mission
  • Cultivate and manage freelance professionals to assist in print design, photography, video production, and other media needs
  • Organize and maintain photo and video files for NRVC promotional use
  • Track engagement across various platforms and adjust strategies based on data in collaboration with the NRVC leadership team to increase member engagement
  • Consult with the website developer/manager regarding ongoing website functionality and resolve website issues
  • Coordinate with the Director of Finance and Operations to prepare an annual budget

KEY COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the design and production of NRVC’s digital, video, and print content
  • Plan and produce the quarterly HORIZON journal, a highly respected publication within vocation ministry. (Refer to the HORIZON Journal Scope of Work for details)
  • Consult with the NRVC leadership team to plan and produce:
  • Focus on Vocation Ministry, our monthly digital newsletter published on the first of every month
  • Catalyst blog, published on the 15th of every month
  • social media posts which include institute feast days, member interests, and vocation news
  • other communications as needed
  • Lead and oversee the production of the Annual Report in collaboration with the leadership team
  • Assist the Director of Mission Integration in the production of vocation resources
  • Assist the Director of Membership in publicizing workshops and events
  • Generate and share editorial ideas with VISION editors
  • Contract outside vendors and freelancers within budget for print and design work
  • Serve as the HORIZON, VISION, and Website Services liaison to the National Board
  • Act as a liaison for at least one National Board Standing Committee

General

♦ Participate with the National Board and Office to ensure that the mission, vision, and values of the NRVC are clearly met
♦ Support the organizational culture of trust, teamwork, and competence in service of the members for the overall success of the NRVC
♦ Uphold team leadership by preparing for, attending, assisting, and participating in weekly check-in meetings via Zoom, monthly operations meetings, quarterly strategic visioning meetings on-site, and communications meetings with partners; continue to develop the pillars of the team leadership model: mission-driven, member focused, leaderful, and accountable
♦ Operate as a consistently professional public representative of the NRVC; represent the NRVC at external events as needed
♦ Provide office hours determined in conjunction with the leadership team to best serve the membership of the NRVC
♦ Prepare for, attend, assist, and participate in NRVC events, the biennial Convocation, and Board meetings with travel as needed
♦ Assist with general office duties to support the ongoing mission of the NRVC  

Education

Undergraduate/graduate degree in communications, publishing, marketing, or related discipline. Additional degree and/or work experience in pastoral studies, theology or similar a related field is preferable

Experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Minimum five years of experience in communications, publishing, marketing, or related field preferred
  • Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office, email broadcast software (Emma), website editing, Zoom, Dropbox, and other appropriate office software; ability to learn new technology skills
  • Proficiency in Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, digital content strategy
  • Track record of maintaining production schedules
  • Understanding of tenets and ethics of journalism, publishing, and copyright
  • Cultural and ecclesial competency, understands and supports the mission of the Roman Catholic Church, consecrated life, and vocation ministry
  • Communication and collaborative skills; ability to sustain professional relationships
  • Ability to create original and professional correspondence; excellent written and verbal skills in English; other language skills an asset
  • Highly organized and detail oriented; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision
  • Professional problem-solving skills and self-control in stressful situations
  • Trustworthy, honest, and discreet; practices a high level of confidentiality and integrity
  • Adaptable and flexible in meeting the changing needs of the organization and the development of this position
  • Demonstrates personal initiative in meeting time schedules
  • Consistent access to high-speed internet and reliable cell phone service for off-site job responsibilities, as this position offers the opportunity to work on-site or remotely
  • Ability and willingness to accept and respond appropriately to professional evaluation of the position

Sister Dina Bato, S.P.
Director of membership

  • Develops strategies for NRVC membership appeals and renewals including follow-up with lapsed members.
  • Leads efforts in support of annual events such as Summer Institute, World Day for Consecrated Life, Catholic Sisters Week, World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Religious Brothers Day, and Vocation Awareness Week.
  • Liaison to the African American Vocation Committee and Incorporating Cultural Diversity Committee.

Sister Dina joined the NRVC team in August 2022. As a Sister of Providence of Saint Mary of the Woods, Indiana, she made her perpetual profession in 2017. She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and a master's in pastoral theology from Saint Meinrad School of Theology. Sister Dina has supported congregational vocation promotion events, along with experience in parish and young adult ministry. Sister Dina is a member of Giving Voice. She enjoys writing, cooking, baking, music, walking, and time with friends and family.

Sister Deborah Borneman, SS.C.M.   
Director of mission integration

  • Liaison to all major collaborators, USCCB-CCLV, Member Area Coordinators, and serves as ex officio, non-voting member of the National Board.
  • Cultivates member engagement by planning and implementing the Orientation Program for Vocation Ministers, Convocation, and resources.
  • Provides consultation and presentations on assessment, promotion, and research to members, religious leadership, institutes, and organizations.

Sister Debbie joined the NRVC team in August 2011. A Sister of Saints Cyril and Methodius, she has served in vocation ministry for over 20 years and has additional ministerial experience in pastoral care, youth ministry, college campus ministry, congregational leadership, and immigration advocacy. She regularly presents throughout the United States and Ireland. She also presented recently on vocations in Canada, and Rome. Sister Debbie holds a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Studies from the Loyola University of Chicago. She is a generous inviter who lives with abundant hope, boundless compassion, and radical availability.

Sister Kathleen Branham, O.S.F.
Director of database administration

  • Oversees registrations, including membership, workshops, and events; and assists members with access to resources and benefits, including Misericordia grant applications.
  • Maintains the membership databases, creating protocols to ensure data integrity and safety. 
  • Liaison to website services, publications, and Governance Committee.

Sr. Kathleen started serving with the NRVC on May 13, 2024. Born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, she professed her final vows in 2007 with the Sisters of Saint Francis, Oldenburg, IN. She began congregational vocation ministry in 2019 including serving as an NRVC Midwest Member Area Coordinator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in social justice from Marian University. She received a master’s certificate through the Center for Adoption Support and Education, and spiritual direction certification through the Benet Hill Spiritual Direction Program. She enjoys cooking, music, and creating beautiful cards to give away.

MaureMaureen Ceteraen Cetera
Director of finance and operations

  • Safeguard and manages the assets of the NRVC.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining the structure and financial model needed to sustain and grow the organization.
  • Acts on behalf of the organization for financial and contractual purposes. 

Maureen joined the NRVC team in August 2016. Her 30 years of experience with Church finance and accounting include positions with the Archdiocese of Chicago as Accounting Manager, Budget Manager, and Financial Analyst; Business Manager at Old Saint Patrick's Church; and Office Administrator for the NALM. Maureen’s degrees include an undergraduate degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MBA from Saint Xavier University, and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union. She serves the Archdiocese of Chicago as a lay ecclesial minister and has 30-plus years of parish ministry experience. Maureen and her husband, Tom, have three children and are active in their parish, St. George.

Phil Loftus Phil Loftus
Director of development 

  • Develops and implement strategies to raise funds for the NRVC.
  • Cultivates fruitful relationships with donors and collaborators for the advancement of the NRVC mission via grants, planned giving, and endowment monies.
  • Implements all development strategies and functions, provides consultation for marketing of these efforts.
     

Phil Loftus joined the NRVC team in 2018. He brings 30 years of marketing experience to his role of increasing donor awareness and support of NRVC.  Phil’s career has focused on launching and growing brands and leading innovative initiatives, including the “Got Milk?” campaign. Phil holds a degree in economics from the University of Illinois. He and his wife, Lorreto Kennedy, have three children and are active parishioners at St. Mary's of the Woods Parish. Phil currently serves on the Board of Regents at St. Ignatius College Prep. He is also the Executive Director of the National Fund for Catholic Religious Vocations.

Carol Schuck Scheiber has been a publications editor for NRVC since 1998. She edits HORIZON, the NRVC Focus on Ministry monthly newsletter, VISION Vocation Guide, and contributes to NRVC’s websites and social media. She also helps form communications strategies for NRVC. Carol has applied her expertise in communications to numerous nonprofits over the years. She has presented at communications workshops as part of the NRVC Summer Institute. She and her husband are parents to three young adults.

The National Board ensures the implementation of the NRVC goals, objectives, and policies, overseeing the functioning of the NRVC. The National Board is composed of 8-12 members and the ex-officio who serves as a non-voting member of the Board.  The National Office oversees the daily operation of the organization and is accountable to the National Board. 

The term of office for a Board member is three years, serving no more than two consecutive terms. By the spring of each year, the National Board selects new members from those recommended by the membership to bring particular skills to the Board and to help ensure a balance of gender, geographic, and cultural representation.   

The responsibilities of the National Board are:

  • Select the executive committee.
  • Oversee and evaluate the National Office staff; review and modify job description as needed.
  • Determine goals and objectives; establish policies.
  • Recommend the development of programs and services.
  • Provide for a national biennial convocation.
  • Provide for national coordination of Member Areas.
  • Act as an official voice for the organization.
  • Approve the annual budget and review financial reports.
  • Determine annual dues.
  • Allocate funds for Member Areas.
  • Establish and evaluate committees, advisory boards, and task forces; dissolve when appropriate.
  • Appoint all committee members.
  • Appoint Board liaisons to committees.
  • Review Constitutions and propose amendments as necessary.
  • Select Board members as specified in the Constitution.      

At its spring meeting, the National Board selects new members for a three-year term from the recommendations. The Board seeks to bring skills and experience to the Board to help ensure a balance of gender, geographical, and cultural representation, and to image the breadth and diversity of religious consecration in the Church through its new appointments.

The National Board will meet April 9-13, 2025 in Mesilla Park, NM, and September 8-12, 2025, in Chicago, IL.
