Is it Generational, Cultural or Family of Origin? Issues in Candidate Assessment

July 26-28, 2021

By National Office

Please note Summer Institute registration closed on June 30.

Inquirers, discerners and candidates come from varied ages, ethnicities, and families. How can we distinguish and understand patterns of behavior to assess skills for ministerial readiness and community living? This workshop will bring together three skillful presenters to share their professional insights and ministerial experiences to unpack the question, “Is it generational, cultural, or family of origin?” The more aware we are of the ways in which multiple and intersecting aspects of one’s cultural identity through the lens of family of origin impacts relationships, communication, decision making, and behavior, the more effective we can be in our accompaniment, assessment, and formation of candidates for religious life.

This online workshop is designed with three distinct professional presenters to deepen intercultural competence, enhance assessment skills, and keep your attention.

Please note this three day workshop begins each day at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Central time. There are 2 scheduled breaks along with a 60 minute lunch from 11:30 - 12:30 (CT) to avoid screen fatigue.

The presentations were excellent and the workshop content was very informative. Being with diverse colleagues assisted the difficult conversations. This workshop exceeded my expectations because of the professional and accessible NRVC Staff and resources available.

--Sister Denise Glazik, O.P.

It was so well-organized, the small groups opportunity was amazing. The chat feature is helpful for questions and for personal messages for networking with other members. I don't think I lost much of anything by not being there in person. Even the breaks were well-spaced, and nice (for introverts like me) to get some recharge time on a personal walk or exercise, and not feel compelled to visit with fellow attendees (though the option is there to come back early from break and visit). The online experience was much more balanced than I expected. Screen stamina was eased by many breaks. There were many more relationship-building and networking opportunities than I expected.

--Brother Paschal Listi, f.b.p

My leadership team encouraged me to attend this workshop. It was educative, informing, enriching, and a great opportunity to be part. I found the presenters to be most helpful.

--Sister Priscilla Nenuwa, S.H.C.J. in Walembelle-Tumu, Ghana
